I ended up doing the same thing this week that I did the last week-headed into Heroes first, since I ended up making myself late by taking a bit too long in the shower, before going by my work. It worked out for the best, I think. Not only did I pick up the issues mentioned below, but I came across a Spider-man book-called Carnage in New York-that I hadn't read in a long time, and bought it. (I wanted to get The Venom Factor hardcover, since that cost only $9.00, but my choices on what to buy this week prevented me from doing so. If it's still there next week, perhaps I'll get to buy it then.)
I haven't reread the aforementioned Spider-Man book, but hope to find time to do so later on.
Batgirl #71
With this book only two issues away from being cancelled by DC Comics-a foolish move, in my personal opinion, even if they've decided to release a Batwoman monthly-things need to be resolved post haste. To that end, this issue worked quite well. Enjoyed the part when Cassandra caught the three shuriken and sent them flying back to their respective owners; one of them, Kitty, lost a piece of her ear due to that move. Another, named Wam-wam, lost a piece of his index finger. Ouch.
Seeing Shrike confront Cassandra again reminded me of the Robin/Batgirl crossover a year ago-though, this time, Robin wasn't a part of the battle. What Shrike said to her might have a part in how this 3-part saga-which I see as a 3-part series finale, in a way-plays out:
"You're only best 'til you're beaten, babe."
Cassandra's response back wasn't only just witty, but also a bit humorous.
"You got better since last time, Shrike. You have talent. Just not enough...'babe.'"
Infinite Crisis #3 of 7
This was one of the most intriguing and compelling issues out of the 7-part saga so far. Batman was approached by Superman from Earth-Two within the walls of the Batcave, so he could make him an offer-an offer to join him. This statement, made by the out-of-time Man of Steel was expected, in some way.
"...The world needs Superman and Batman together. And if you come with me, I promise you...Bruce. I will always stand at your side."
The icing on the cake, in my opinion. Another part I found stunning to see was the confrontation between Lex Luthor and Alexander Luthor. Words were said, but punches weren't thrown. Yet, Lex's battlesuit was destroyed by Superboy-Prime, something I hadn't expected. When Batman replayed what was seen at the end of JLA #119, the pieces came together. Superboy-Prime and Alexander Luthor are working together, they've captured Power Girl and...things are spiraling way out of control.
Robin #145
I find it an irony that the writer of this book seems to have finally started putting out good issues when, come March 2006, a new writer will take over upon the release of Robin #148. (Though, I still hope Tim is Robin during that book.)
Anyway, this one picks up where Robin #144 left off, with the Boy Wonder facing a unknown number of enemies. The good thing is that they're all boxed in, and Robin has excelled at close range combat.
I was impressed when Robin faced someone from the Batcave's database-The Curator. As Tim put it, he's like a human Gorgon-one look at his eyes, and you'd be turned to stone. The solution? Robin fought him blind, and still took him down!
What bored me during the issue was when one of the members of this team called the Shadowpact faced this guy named Fright Knight and ran away screaming after he'd just uttered one word: "Boo." It made me laugh, but it was still boring. Another part that was funny but also irritating was when the Veteran and his team found themselves fighting someone who could pass for a minion of Scarecrow-the Wicker Man. One flick of a lighter, and he was already surrendering.
Other than those two parts, the issue works and the action doesn't just stop-it goes on and is only forced to come to a momentary halt at the end! On the last page, Wonder Girl makes her first appearance on the pages of Robin, and that will lead into next month's Robin #146-with the Teen Titans as guest stars. I'm already counting the days until that happens.
